The carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) buildup in our atmosphere is like a bath filling up and overflowing with water. We need to reduce the flow of emissions. But importantly, we also need to remove emissions already in the atmosphere – the equivalent of pulling the plug.^[1]

The problem is that there is only so much CO 2 left in earth’s budget—measured by the balance between the amount emitted and the amount removed—to keep the world from heating more than 1.5 degrees Celsius. We are burning through this budget at an alarming speed, and without immediate and drastic reductions in emissions, the budget will be spent by 2030.

We must act now. We need to decarbonize at an unprecedented rate, aiming for Net Zero Carbon by 2050 or even sooner. If we fail to do so, we will burden future generations with a world marred by the long-lasting effects of climate change.

As a consultant and climate expert, I’ve worked with people in some of our world’s most vulnerable places who are at greatest risk to the impacts of climate change. It can be difficult emotionally confronting such significant challenges. But when you focus on the human aspect of these challenges, two things happen. First, you see how capable we are of innovation and adaptability, if given the opportunity. And second, you realize that no matter how daunting the challenge, you always move forward. In establishing 319Climate I want to help organizations create tangible change for the climate vulnerable and help accelerate action to create an equitable climate transition to a low carbon, climate resilient future.

With over twenty years of experience as a consultant in climate education and communication, I have found it a privilege to travel and work with people who are the most vulnerable to climate change. As a facilitator, I’ve sat down with communities and listened to their stories about how their life have changed. We talked about weather patterns, food and water security, the future, and how climate change forces uncomfortable decision-making. One of the most compelling stories came from Pacific Island elders who speak to their youth and advise them to be prepared to leave the country as climate impacts worsen. The world the elders knew, loved, and grew old in won’t be the same experience for the younger generation. Here’s what I learned that is critical: climate actions need to be created from the community upwards, not top down. In establishing 319Climate we want to help organizations and communities amplify their voices and create the change that means the most, that is genuine and helps them now and not when it is ‘too late’. This can only be achieved when we collaborate and accelerate the actions needed to help the world move into a low-carbon and climate-resilient future.
